Baccarat's Role and its Uniqueness
Casino operators try to surround Baccarat with a special atmosphere.
The area where the game is played is partitioned, although it is so placed that everybody can see what is going on inside, and the dealers conducting the game are generally in formal attire.
An additional Casino supervisor sits 'kingly' on a throne dominating the area. As a further attraction, relatively good-looking women (who, incidentally, are Casino employees) are always at the tables.
In a certain sense, the Casinos are successful in their efforts to lure gamblers, especially large bettors, into playing this game.
After all, percentage-wise, Baccarat is one of the best games offered to the players.
AS we have seen the House edge is close to one percent and therefore only large, or very large bets, will bring enough profits.
In Baccarat, the players have no options as far as the play of hands is concerned. Thus, Baccarat cannot be played 'badly.'
Blackjack is, of course, a better game for the player than all other Casino games, but only when played skillfully. Various methods are available for players, too, in books and suchlike to help one understand how to play this game.
Baccarat is advertised as the best game for the player. This is certainly not true, even if we exclude Blackjack. Whereas Craps, Pass line bets and Don't pass line bets, with corresponding odds, are better percentage bets for the player.
Some time ago, Casinos offered certain additional 'side bets.'
The players would wager that the Banker's hand would have the value eight, or that it would have the value nine or that, it would be a natural.
E. Thorp of Blackjack fame and some of his associates--- exploited the side bets in their favor by skillful play, and won a substantial amount. When the Casino operators realized what was happening, the problem was simply and swiftly solved.
The side bets were dropped. After all, only a few players understood these bets.
Other types of side bets have been offered more recently. Most were not even discussed since they have not yet been standardized and do not offer any advantage for the players.
A game which might be of interest is Baccarat played with dice. The game could be played under rules similar to those players who had knowledge of, on a table with a simple layout.
As far as this game is concerned, various types of side bets could be added without any danger.
Recently, the game of Baccarat was offered at tables similar to those used for Blackjack, but of course with a different layout.
