Origin of the Baccarat Game

Baccarat is an Italian invention that dates back to the middle ages. Felix Falguierein, an Italian gambler, was said to have invented baccarat. It was first known as Tarrochi and played using a deck of tarot cards.

The game of baccarat was based on an old ritual of the Etrusci people, a pre-Roman Italian civilization. The ritual is consists of nine gods standing tip-toed and praying to a virgin woman with blonde hair, waiting for the woman to throw a die consisting of nine-sides. The result of the throw will determine whether she will become a priestess, be banned from any further religious activity, or be put to death by forcing her to walk into the sea.

It was during the reign of King Charles VIII that baccarat was introduced in France. Baccarat instantly caught the attention of the French noble class that they made the card game exclusive to their class. This association with the upper aristocratic class made baccarat a highly-sophisticated game that it is famous for today.

Years have passed before baccarat was made available to all levels of the French stratum. Baccarat became one of the main features in the newly-established French casinos. With these, the French has truly made baccarat their game of choice, infusing it with so much influence that still persists up to this day. Terms such as "non" and "cheval", are still use as baccarat terms in modern baccarats played today.

A popular version of the French baccarat known as "chemin de fer" is probably one of the most famous baccarat version played in casinos worldwide. "Chemin de fer" was so famous that it is the basis of various baccarat versions known today. It is the basis of the English version, the "European Baccarat", where the American baccarat was mainly derived.

In line with this, European baccarat arrived and became famous in the countries of South America before reaching the United States. The version that is now played in American casinos came from the infamous Capri Casino in Havana, Cuba, before it was closed by the government along with all the casinos in the country during the 1959s. It was also in the same decade that Tommy Renzoni brought baccarat in the United States. Baccarat became an instant hit and became one of the most widely-played card games in American casinos.

Today, baccarat is considered one of the most famous card games not only in Europe and Americas, but also in other parts of the world. Baccarat is widely-played in casinos all over the world, even in streets and online versions. Baccarat has truly made its distinct mark in the gambling world.
